About the Author
Kath Jones is a qualified Clinical Mental Health Nurse with a Master’s Degree of Mental Health Science. Kath has more than 35 years of knowledge and skills as a Nurse Therapist helping those with Anxiety Disorders. In addition, she teaches good mental health coping skills that are helpful to anyone going through the normal response and recovery from extremely challenging events. Her book, Aftershock Bounce Back, draws from personal experience, professional knowledge, and traditional sources of wisdom to help others manage their recovery, build their resilience, and rediscover themselves to live a renewed life. The book was written for those who do not have a mental illness or disorder, but still have to deal with the immense strain that trauma and stress has caused to their body, mind, and soul. Kath advocates for person-centred nursing, which recognises each person as an individual with unique issues and needs. Within each person’s lived experience lays the potential of renewal, and recovery. Through the process self-discovery of our values and our true self, we can find dignity and self-worth. After a lifetime of mental health nursing, these heroes maintain my passion and awe in the capacity of the human spirit to rise up.

Very Practical and Highly Helpful

If you're like most people, you've had your fair (and unfair) share of crises you've had to face and get through. Whether your challenge has been an illness, divorce, death, bankruptcy, losing a job, the emotional turmoil is huge! I was interested then to read about how someone coped when their son almost killed himself through suicide. Unless you've been through this, it's impossible to know how (or if) you'd cope, especially when you know this could happen again.

Based on how the author coped, I knew this was a person I could learn a lot from on how to cope and conquer pain and grief. I wanted to gain skills I could apply to my own life, and then help others who were facing some type of personal crisis.

I liked her point of how the body will naturally bring itself back into equilibrium after a traumatic experience. It's comforting to know that through the pain there's light at the end of what can seem like a very long and dark tunnel. I also liked her quote "Surround yourself only with people who are going to take you higher." (Oprah Winfrey)

Having had experience in grief, I like how Kathy clearly lists at various points in the book the things you might be feeling and the stages you will go through. It's freeing to know you aren't alone or weird in how you feel.

If you would like a lifeline to help you get through the challenges you, or others in your life are facing, this book will help you. I especially liked it's practical vs. academic approach and I think others will also. As I read her book, it felt at times that the author was sitting right next to me compassionately telling her story and offering timing advice.

Valuable insights on overcoming loss and stress

Kath Jones shares valuable insights on how to recover from the debilitating emotions associated with surviving trauma. Anyone struggling with the after-effects of life-changing loss will find the practical, actionable steps in this book both a comfort and a path to healing. The author discusses how tools including mindfulness, affirmations, gratitude, and self-compassion can help us develop resilience. In times of stress we often feel overwhelmed and alone, we wonder if our reactions are ‘normal’ and we struggle with intense and overwhelming feelings. As a mental health professional who has faced her own profound losses, the author’s voice is compassionate and empathetic. I thought addressing the reader in the “Dear You” sections was a lovely and encouraging part of the book. For those facing situations and emotions that seem beyond our ability to cope, this book is a wonderful resource.

Highly recommended for anyone experiencing or having experienced trauma

I have gained so much insight into the way our body and mind works in a traumatic situation, by reading this book. The author explains in great detail why we react to trauma so profoundly, and what are the things that we normally experience during such an event. It is so helpful to know that the waves of thoughts and emotions that overwhelm us during these times are natural - they are helping us deal with the reality and move forward.

It is also very helpful to know what to do when we feel intense emotions, and the author has done such an amazing job at teaching us the coping skills that are necessary in this painful process. The author is a mental health professional who has been teaching coping skills to her patients for years. Throughout the book she relates her personal story and shows deep empathy and understanding of our human nature.

She offers many techniques and encouragement that can help tremendously during a traumatic event. In those moments, it's good to know we are not alone, and this book does exactly that!

I highly recommend it for anyone who has experienced a traumatic event. This book will help with understanding the event, with healing and moving forward!
