About the Author
He is a monk and a student of Buddhist philosophy at Tibetan Buddhist Monastic University. Since childhood, he was drawn to the different prayer of Buddhism. It was something so close to him that he shed tears of joy while praying. Gradually, he developed higher interest in prayers. For him, those prayers are almost like poetry. Eventually, he has started writing poetry that captures his inner thoughts.

Verses as balsam
( a brief article about Wangdan's book Love The Foundation of Lasting Happiness)
It is possible , as we are going to review this collection of poems written by our best friend, that we are not objective. But is literary criticism never objective? After all, does not the reviewer examine things from his own point of view, while adorning of cultural references and philosophical analysis?
But let's focus on the author and his work: Wangdan is an unusual poet; is a Buddhist monk of Tibetan tradition who has chosen to write in a language not his own, English. Difficult choice and rare in the literary scene since always, as an example of authors who did the same thing we can think of only the novelist Nabokov and a few others. It is about changing the skin, to let the emotions, feelings, spiritual journeys in the bottleneck of a language that is not the native tongue.
Behind this decision there is by Wangdan the clear desire to contact as many people as possible, using the most widely spoken language in the world. This is because of the urgency and importance of the message to be communicated not allow him to use the Tibetan.
Wangden is not a poet intimate, tightly locked in his verses, indeed, he opens to the world, announces with humility and sharpness at the same time that his word is the word of love with the 'l' capital, love as the ultimate foundation of life, love as a force underlying the daily life.
From the linguistic side, and from the poetical side too, he gets happy results. His English comes to us direct, clear and simple but never ordinary. The lightness of his talking expressing deep concepts such as non-attachment, compassion, the cornerstones of Buddhism, make us love his work immediately. The truth always comes with delicate grace, never imposes itself with stump.
If it is true, and the evidence shows, that real poetry arises when starting by ourselves we are able to communicate universal themes, then the author for this, but not only for this as we shall see later, has managed to be a poet. He speaks of love: what could be more common to all humanity?
Since it would be impossible in the short space of this article to examine the poem one by one , we'll just take a few excerpts from the sections in which the book is divided in order to understand the style and the poetry of this young author.
From The Radiance of Love:
I wish to have/ A love like air,/ Which is available every time, / totally useful to everyone.
I wish to have/ A love like the sun,/ Which overcomes the darkness/ Where it shines.
I wish to have/ A love like earth,/ Which bears/ Every force of pain.
I wish to have/ A love like water,/ Which always quenches/ The thirst of joy of everyone.
Each verse begins with 'I wish to have', a reiterative effect of unquestionable performance in terms of music and poetry that serves the poet to emphasize the broad scope of his wish. And then comparisons with the four elements ( air, fire , earth, water ) , the building blocks of matter according to Buddhist philosophy ... Here , a knowledge deposited with lightness and grace between verses .
At each enjambement it corresponds to a hemistich that begins with a capital letter, a happy way to give more strength to the verse.
Further on, we find very tender accents for a mother's love that can not fail to strike the reader. Maternal love that makes us come into the world, maternal love that instills in us a love for all , unconditional love and without attachment .
From Chants of Light and Peace:
I have been fallen/Into a cyclic existence,/ Unable to walk in a safe direction.
The beginning is remarkable : in a few words the human fall in samsara is expressed in all its tragedy, with the lack of wisdom that makes us blind .
Here then a heartfelt invocation to Buddha arises: Oh, Buddha, wait for me..../I'm coming, coming to Nirvana.
All the verses are played on the recurrence of these words to give rhythm and expressive force to the whole message. A prayer, a moving profession of faith in the Dharma.
In the section On to the Rooftop we find Wangdan more intimate , nestled in a meditative solitude : The beauty of the night is/ Untouched, perfect.
Few words to describe the charm of the night , and the stars as he writes later. There is a Zen flavor in these verses , both aesthetically and in awareness. The author immerses himself in a deep connection to the universe . The interdependent origination, central point of Buddhism, is here felt with the heart , not intellectualized .
The section Starlight 's Whispers is the ideal continuation of the previous one. Here reflection deepens and verses of invocation to the moon (which has inspired many poets ) bring out the concept of clear inner light ,another focus of Mahayana Buddhism . And Wangdan does it with the lightness of a child , and in full awareness , rides with challenging grace spiritual themes : Oh, radiant moon, please/ Don't hide behind clouds. / Show me the clear light.
Notice how 'please' before enjambement confers a rhythmic suspension that gives more emphasis to the following words.
And we come to Verses of life in Clarity closing the journey of the poet with a song on compassion as a means for the enlightenment.
Observe these verses that in a few words manage to enclose the whole
sense of meditative practice: The mind can be controlled;/ It has the ability to shine./ It can transcend common senses.
Wangdan has the gift of synthesis coupled with an unusual but effective musicality. ' has', 'shine', 'senses': how many 's' that make the verses play like a slow and persuasive whisper.
Here is a book that enchants us and , above all, makes us think giving us a hope , the prospect of staying in the world a bit ' better cultivating loving kindness and compassion inherent in every human being .
