How We Are: Book One of the How to Live Trilogy, by Vincent Deary

We live in small worlds.

How We Are is an astonishing debut and the first part of the monumental How to Live trilogy, a profound and ambitious work that gets to the heart of what it means to be human: how we are, how we break, and how we mend.

In Book One, How We Are, we explore the power of habit and the difficulty of change. As Vincent Deary shows us, we live most of our lives automatically, in small worlds of comfortable routine--what he calls Act One. Conscious change requires deliberate effort, so for the most part we avoid it. But inevitably, from within or without, something comes along to disturb our small worlds--some News from Elsewhere. And, with reluctance, we begin the work of adjustment: Act Two.

Over decades of psychotherapeutic work, Deary has witnessed the theater of change--how ordinary people get stuck, struggle with new circumstances, and finally transform for the better. He is keenly aware that novelists, poets, philosophers, and theologians have grappled with these experiences for far longer than psychologists. Drawing on his own personal experience and a staggering range of literary, philosophical, and cultural sources, Deary has produced a mesmerizing and universal portrait of the human condition.

Part psychologist, part philosopher, part novelist, Deary helps us to see how we can resist being habit machines and make our acts and our lives more fully our own.

Review
"["How We Are" is] a book about human nature. It's crammed with ideas. It makes your head spin, in a good way. It tells us that human beings form habits, and that we are less in control of our minds than we thought we were. This is how we are. I'm looking forward to how we break." --William Leith, "The Spectator "

"Exhilarating... a lyrical, consoling exploration... It takes guts to recognise that change is called for, and more to follow it through. This book - so long as you don't read it on autopilot - should help" --Oliver Burkeman, "The Guardian"

"Fascinating, profound, wonderfully well-observed... ["How We Are"] could change lives." --Bel Mooney, "The Daily Mail"

"The one self-help book that's actually worth reading." "--""The Spectator

Brilliant and Profound. Has the potential to bring you back in control of your life or start you on the path.
By Siddharth Nair
As someone who has read a lot of books about the brain and how we think and why, I didn't have too many expectations about this book. I saw it in my public library and picked it up out of interest, but after finishing this book, all I can say is Wow!

This book has given me some deep insights about myself and helped me understand my subconscious to a degree of depth where I'm confident that the changes will have a life long impact. I can see myself changing routines and catching things that I wouldn't have done before and this is in part because of the style with which Vincent writes and communicates his subject.

The writing style is more 'Flow of consciousnesses' and introspection into his own thought process, and this is both the pro and the con of this book.

Pro: You have a first hand experience of the challenges and the thoughts that run through someone who is aware of what's going on so he can mentally label and identify the process. This give you a better way to catch it yourself.

Con: It's harder to keep track of the theme and how things relate because it jumps from one topic to the other. But all of the topics have such hidden gems of insight in the way they are compared and contrasted and each rabbit hole will give you a deeper insight into the topic at hand..But you'll have to look hard for it...

In some sense I think the kind of person that would enjoy this book is one who likes to have conversations about the mundane or typical with a very intelligent or keenly observant group of friends. You move beyond the surface and really parse out patterns and thoughts and ideas that are at the heart of what makes us individuals and what makes us the human species at the same time.

Can't wait for the next books. But my advice would be to tighten up the narrative a bit to keep the them more centered but not to the extent of sacrificing the insightful quality and conversational nature of this book.

To give some perspective on my opinion I have read ...
By Benjamin Stevens
To give some perspective on my opinion I have read my share of self help, psychology, spirituality, and philosophy books. I've spent the bulk of the past two years studying the unconscious mind. I was abused as a child and have been reading in order to recover for decades now. In the self help genre this book is a work of art. It is not the canned, sell lots of books, stereotypical self help book that fill the shelves. I quit reading self help books for a long time because they all seemed the same after awhile. This book is not typical. There is some advice in this book, of course, but it is the truth that sets one free; this book is true. I find it tremendously helpful to gain the perspective of someone who has spent so much time trying to figure out life while helping others. Isn't that the most valuable kind of book?

Stream of Consciousness Meets Changemaster
By Bob Griffin
So, I saw the other review for this book and I guess I don't get it, either that or I have ADD. I think this is brialliant. Not in the same way that "The Power Of Habit" is brilliant. But just as potent. If you are seeking to make changes in your life you should read this and the above book. Each has much to offer you if you are open to it. This book is more stream of conscious, but it has its moments of clear, pointed logic that slays things to its core.
