About the Author
Vicki Mandell-King has been writing poetry for most of her life. She intended to do so as a career, but in 1970, a stranger on an airplane observed, “It seems like you want to change the world. How about law school?” That random remark led to a 30-year career as an Assistant Federal Public Defender, but she never stopped writing poetry. Her work has been published in a variety of literary journals and a collection entitled Tenacity of Lace. Mandell-King writes “to get to the bottom of things,” to surprise herself. She and her husband live in an old, continuously remodeled Victorian in a vibrant community near the foothills of the Rockies. Their son and family live close by.

Powerful Poems

A Touchin Journey to the End

A most personal journey into the darkest yet brightest moments that await us at the end of, not life, but this particular stage. This return to almost pure infancy, where the adult child is no longer who they were in all their fullness, yet we still love them, we still remember how special they were, is something many of us are meant to live, to absorb. The author tells the world the deepest, most blindingly brutal detail of it, and how it affects the caregiver.
The reader is led masterfully from death's doorstep and back to a "normal" innocent smile on the old one's face. What is this painful, beautiful mystery, where "this unique sunrise/is all there is" to the elder. The grandchild laid next to her reveals her "face like a rippled lake."
This book of poetry may stand alone. You think of all the people who have been through this and might truly need it.
Vicki Mandell-King's capacity as a writer of great human feeling, to touch with love and care, with loyalty and duty, ALL the difficulty is remarkable.
This is a book I won't forget, ever. It ends with the revelation, "These bodies have been what separate us.... and rid of them we are closer together
than ever."
