Daryl Wein discovered he was among the millions of patients with type 2 diabetes while studying to become a Physician Assistant. That's when he found out that, despite type 2 diabetes making up the vast majority of cases, most of the reading material he could find was geared toward patients with type 1 diabetes. Type 2 Diabetes The Owner's Manual is his way of fixing that. This handbook is an easy-to-read guide on how to manage your blood sugar primarily through diet. It is written clearly and concisely, explaining the difference between the two diseases in a way that is easy to grasp. You don't have to be a health professional to understand the book. Wein includes concrete examples of what to eat and what to avoid. He talks about the importance of exercise and provides information about medicines in a way that the layman can comprehend without needing to know medical terminology. The book also includes a useful question-and-answer section that covers a variety of specifics about type 2 diabetes to help you make sense of it all. Wein knows about the frustration and fear diabetics feel, because he's been there. As he explains in the book, when he experienced blurred vision and other health problems while studying to become a Physician Assistant, he discovered that he was among the millions diagnosed each year with type 2 diabetes. "There was no mistake: I was now a diabetic!" he writes. "I sat down and started crying, not something I would ordinarily allow myself to do." He goes on to describe how a mentor told him that diabetes can usually be managed easily. He made sure to explain that failing to control it can lead to serious health problems including blindness, kidney failure, and limb amputations. He offered hope. Wein's book offers the same message of hope, along with a somber reminder that failing to control diabetes can lead to premature death. He provides readers with the right information to help make sure they understand that this doesn't have to happen to them. The author also makes clear the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes, suggesting that type 2 diabetes needs to have a new name. That name should be "carbosis," he argues, which gets right to the point that type 2 diabetes is a disease where the body does not process carbohydrates correctly. He has conveniently included tabular lists of many foods, showing the carbohydrate content of each. "My intent in writing this book is to finally provide a source of information geared specifically for you and me, along with the millions of others with this disease and the many millions who have it but don't yet know it," he writes. "This book is designed primarily to provide clear guidance for patients." You don't have to be a health expert to manage the disease. Wein lays it out to his patients, about eighty percent of whom, he estimates, have well-controlled blood sugar levels. Type 2 Diabetes The Owner's Manual can be your step-by-step guide on how to control your disease. Let this book help you manage type 2 diabetes rather than letting the disease manage you.

About the Author
Daryl Wein is a family practice Physician Assistant who both treats diabetics and has type 2 diabetes, himself. He graduated from U.C. Davis School of Medicine in 1999 after working for twenty years as a clinical laboratory scientist. Wein's own experience having type 2 diabetes helped motivate him to write a guidebook meant to help people manage the disease. He learned from a mentor that, while it can cause serious health problems, there are simple steps people can take to control the disease. Wein is also a licensed commercial pilot and flight instructor.

This is an excellent book to read if you have Type 2 Diabetes. This us a no fluff book that has useful information, it has excellent help in maintenance, diet and more.
Personally, I do not have Diabetes, yet I found this book very meaningful because of the food information in it. I like that Mr Wein lists the BAD FOOD and the GOOD foods (low carb foods).
Most of this book, I found a short read, yet I believe it has great information.
I really liked the Questions and Answers. These answers/info were fantastic!
Also, I liked the Appendix A...this is a food list with total carbs, this is sorted by HIGHEST CARB to Lowest carb.
In my opinion, this book is helpful for one who has Type 2 Diabetes. And it is also a great help for one who is health conscious and watching their weight and carbs.
Book provided in exchange for my unbiased review. I like this book, my opinion is that it is helpful for the Type 2 Diabetic or a health conscious person

'The single most important thing to do is to avoid eating carbohydrates’
By Grady Harp
California author Daryl Wein has written the new hallmark for understanding and treating Diabetes Mellitus Type 2, and while it is directed to those who have been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes it is one of the most user friendly manuals for understand and thus preventing the development of this once dreaded ailment. Daryl’s credentials are impressive - he earned a degree as a medical technologist/clinical laboratory scientist from USC Medical Center in 1978 and earned a degree as a Family Practice Physician Assistant from UC Davis School of Medicine in 1999 and has worked as a PA throughout California, including Urgent Care, Hospital ERs, California Correctional Health Care System, and for rural health clinics, all the while teaching and developing software, and performing as a musician!
As Daryl states in his supportive Introduction, he was diagnosed as a Type 2 Diabetic, but investigating the permutations of that dreaded diagnosis he came to the conclusion, ‘I have learned a lot. I have learned that I am really NOT “diabetic.” I have learned that the vast majority of diabetics have what is officially called “type 2 diabetes.’ Which is not diabetes at all but a completely different disease.’ And with that open door Daryl invites the reader into one of the most accessible overviews of what Type 2 Diabetes really is – a problem with carbohydrates (sugars and starches). ‘Simply put, we cannot process carbohydrates correctly, so we eventually develop elevated blood sugar levels, especially after meals. In a nut shell, carbohydrates are quite toxic to us whereas they may be less so for normal people.’
Daryl’s forte as a writer and coach is his willingness to include himself in the discussion about the causes, diagnosis, prevention, management, and treatment of Type 2 Diabetes: his advice and recommendations come from his personal management of his own condition and that fact makes the reader (likely intimidated with the new diagnostic label of Type 2 Diabetes) comfortable with his presentation.
We as a nation grow ever more obese despite the expensive media blast of new diet regimens, pharmaceuticals and supplements ‘guaranteed to burn fat’, cosmetic procedures designed to melt/freeze/laser fat to trim the unwanted adipose tissue down to manageable size – costly, not well regulated, temporary fads even in the fast food chains that tout low calorie new snacks. What Daryl does is offer concrete information, education, advice, answers to questions patients have submitted, and finally an extensive appendix of numerous foods (including the so-called diet foods) giving the total carbohydrate content – an excellent guide to eating well and eating and living informed.
This book belongs on the shelves of everyone concerned about a new diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes, and for that matter, on the reading list of everyone concerned about health now and in the future. The book may seem oversimplified to some, but read on an see how incorporating this information not only is for Type 2 (and incipient Type 2) diabetics, but for everyone conscious about health and weight and living longer! This Book Saved My Life
By Tee
First I have to say that this book has helped me tremendously because I am a Type 2 Diabetic and I have a very hard time controlling my blood sugars. This book came at the right time because I have been back and forth with doctors and being in the hospital because of my uncontrolled diabetes. My eyesight is suffering from it and there are days when I can't see at all.
The one thing I learned from this book that is so important is that carbs kill. There is a thing called Carbosis which is having an elevated blood sugar for a longtime. Carbs create high blood sugars that go on to other things. One phrase that kept coming back to me was "Blood - Sugar Blanche". BLANCHE stands for Blood -Legs amputated - Atherosclerotic - Nerve problems - Circulatory Problems - Heart Disease - Existing only because of Dialysis treatment. This had me thinking I need to make sure I stay away from carbs and re-exam what I eat and male sure I take my blood sugar everyday and eat healthy and exercise.
