Many have met their future spouses and countless friends on the job. It is therefore very important to be able to adjust well to the workplace and all its challenges.


This book is conceived as a simple guide on how an employee can use the theories of psychology in their day to day life. It is not meant to be a definitive discussion of the theories of psychology. A call to action to pick up a in-depth text book instead

The human psyche is complex. The number of scholars and authors learning and explaining its workings and effects on others in the fields of psychology and sociology is countless. The workplace is one of the challenging, embarrassing places to expose your strengths and weaknesses, your competent and incompetent behavior. David Miller presented me his new e-book Psychology: A Simple Guide to Workplace Psychology: Psychology Tips for the Employee, which basically grabs lessons from contemporary thinkers like Peter Warr (Psychology at work) and Steve Nguyen (Workplace psychology) and presents these in a dense pack of text addressing topics like self management, the drivers autonomy, mastery and purpose, job crafting, and demand control. Emotional intelligence, trust, safety, altruism, burnout (prevention), and belonging (organizational citizenship) are covered briefly. The last chapter is devoted to three groups of personality disorders: sociopathy and psychopathy, narcissism and histrionic personality, and borderline and bipolar personality. All of these are important and have far reaching effects, although a superficial treatment in a 1-hour e-book read cannot serve any other purpose than a call to action to pick up a full text book on a topic of choice.

Comprehensive and well researched

Tips for Workplace Psychology is a comprehensive and well-researched assessment to be used to increase your effectiveness based upon how you interact with people at work.

The chapters are laid out well and there are references throughout the book of the research behind the points that Miller makes.

While the book is not lengthy, it is very full of information that can be applied to a broad range of situations.

The difference between 4 and 5 stars on this book for me would be to have broken out some of the key actions and takeaways as top level bullets followed by the deeper explanation and research. There are some scenarios that are more relevant to me than others. These I would likely want to read about in more details. Others I would probably prefer only knowing high level points about. I found towards the end of this book I was having fewer takeaways in my reading based upon the length and volume of the supporting information provided.

I think this book is a good reference that people can learn from in multiple kinds of work settings.

simplistic overview on workplace phsychology

An overview of a lot of phrases used in workplace psychology. Totally useless for anyone looking for a guide to actaully navigate workplace politics. Too simplistic for supervisors except if you are completely clueless and want to be exposed to some terms so you know what to look for. Nothing practical on how to implement. Apparently written by academic who never dealt with real world organizational issues. It assumes supervisors have authority to redesign job roles and organizational structure. For larger corporations structure is usually set by people who are familiar with these buzz words and a touch of practicality.

Might be good for a small business/ entrepreneur who has stumbled into business and has no idea about how he/ she should treat employees; but anyone that clueless is unlikely to be business success and those who are successful tend to be too egotistical to take outside advice.
