What's worse, because Lieberman hired a talented writer to assist ...

I'm biased. I am a historian of psychiatry. Really. I have a PhD from the University of Michigan, served on the faculty of the University of Chicago, and wrote a book on the history of psychotherapy. I have read virtually all of the English language secondary literature in the field and ample chunks of the primary literature from the nineteenth and early twentieth century; less so of more recent vintage. So arrogant as this may sound, I know what I'm talking about. This book is compendium of errors -- at least from a historian's perspective. It fails to consider virtually all of the scholarship produced over the past fifty years on the subject, cites virtually no primary sources, and simply recycles common stories -- many of which have long since been discredited. What's worse, because Lieberman hired a talented writer to assist him, much of the nonsense he peddles has the perverse virtue of being extraordinarily well written. I don't say this as someone who has any axe to grind with biological approaches to mental illness. I'm a big fan of these approaches. That said, this book does an extraordinary disservice to those who have been producing exceptional scholarship in the field for decades. What's more, it reveals how easy it is for a well-respected (and deservedly so) physician to publish nonsense about a subject about which he knows little and has probably read even less. Save your money. Read Roy Porter. Andrew Scull. Jack Pressman. Or me. Eric Caplan. You might not agree with me. But I can promise you this: I did my homework. That's not something Dr. Lieberman can say. What's more, I didn't pay someone to write my book for me.

Corruption?

I haven't read the book. I am a psychiatrist who just received a promotional e-mail about this book -- from the American Psychiatric Association (APA), of which Dr. Lieberman is past-president of.
The problem I have is that the APA has its own publishing arm, called "APPI" or something similar. Because of this, the APA will NOT promote
publications from any other publishing house.
Except in Dr. Lieberman's case, which I presume is because Dr. Lieberman has a ton of connections since he is the outgoing APA president.
I have several psychiatrist colleagues who have written excellent books/textbooks from outside publishing houses who were not given support by the APA since the APA's own publishing arm was not utilized. That they made an exception for Dr. Lieberman, to me, feels like a corruption.
Below, I have pasted the e-mail I received form the APA. He is marketing his book under the guise of "Lets all of us psychiatrists get together and keep helping our patients and improving our field. And let's do it by promoting my book"....
Dear Friend and Colleague,
I am writing to share some thoughts and an important message. Over the course of my 30 year career in psychiatry, I have become increasingly concerned that many people suffer from the symptoms of mental illness unnecessarily, either because they are ashamed of their condition or unable to access competent care. Imagine if the population of our country was afflicted with infectious diseases like pneumonia, tuberculosis, smallpox and HIV and they did not seek or could not get antibiotics, vaccines or protease inhibitors.
This is the reality for millions of people in the U.S. and around the world and it is a reality that is no longer tolerable. It is simply unacceptable that the greatest barrier to symptomatic relief and recovery for mentally ill persons is not a lack of scientific knowledge or effective treatments, but stigma. Why in the 21st Century, with scientific progress and effective treatments (psychosocial, pharmacologic and neuromodulatory) that are available, should this continue to be the case?
I decided to write Shrinks, The Untold Story of Psychiatry because I could no longer tolerate this historical injustice. In Shrinks, I tell the fascinating and scandalous story of psychiatry’s evolution from a mystical pseudoscience to a bona fide medical discipline that helps people and saves lives.
Shrinks reveals exemplary case studies of patients and vivid portraits of the luminaries of our field who challenged the status quo and drove progress. The book also makes an urgent call-to-arms for the public and media to start treating mental illness as a disease rather than a state of mind. As a member of this profession, I think you will find this story incredibly illuminating and inspiring.
Published by Little, Brown and Company, Shrinks was released on March 10th and is available in bookstores and on-line.

Earnest account of one dimension of The Mental Health, which needed to be told. However, the book is seriously marred by an impassioned contempt for psychoanalysis, which is not a balanced presentation, and seems neither to get it nor be up to date.
