About the Author
Marina Cantacuzino is an award-winning journalist who in 2003, in response to the imminent invasion of Iraq, embarked on a personal project collecting stories from people who had lived through violence, tragedy or injustice and sought forgiveness rather than revenge. In 2004, she founded The Forgiveness Project (www.theforgivenessproject.com), a charitable organisation that uses real personal narratives to explore how ideas around forgiveness, reconciliation and conflict resolution can be used to impact positively on people's lives. In 2012, Marina spoke at the UN General Assembly about the work of The Forgiveness Project and, in 2015, she was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the Dalai Lama Centre for Compassion.

"...Stories for a Vengeful Age" cuts to the core of some of our (humanity's) most basic instincts and feelings

I just finished reading "The Forgiveness Project: Stories for a Vengeful Age" edited by Marina Cantacuzino, founder and director of the Forgiveness Project.
This is a wonderful, fascinating (and occasionally painful, 'in a good way') read. It cuts to the core of some of our (humanity's) most basic instincts and feelings, especially those that cause us to harm and to be harmed by others. The emphasis in "The Forgiveness Project: Stories for a Vengeful Age" is on how we deal with the aftermath of that inevitable harm -- from a global to a personal level. This is masterfully accomplished by the book's editor and the variety of authors (accompanied by their photographs) and their stories, whether as 'victims,' 'perpetrators,' a combination of both, or as witnesses.
I really like the book's pragmatic, non-preacherly, honest style. As an example, one of my favorite passages comes from the author's introduction: "...if forgiveness is about reconciliation, it doesn't necessarily mean reconciling with the perpetrator; first and foremost it means reconciling with yourself. Making peace with a painful event is what allows people to live with hurt and catastrophe, find resolution and move on."
Another example, also from author's introduction is: "Forgiveness cannot be deemed right for everyone, no matter how desirable that outcome might be."
Read "The Forgiveness Project: Stories for a Vengeful Age" and you will likely never again see in the same light conflicts of all sorts, and the difficult choices made to escalate, defuse, or reconcile (or not) with them. At least that's what happened to me in the course of immersing myself in this book. I recommend this book to policy makers, politicians, regional and urban planners, K-12 school administrators and teachers, university administrators and professors, psychologists, sociologists, counselors, United Nations representatives, members of armed forces, heads and staff of non-governmental organizations -- everyone in the world who deals with conflict, including regular people of all walks of life such as myself.

Marina Cantacuzino has made possible the collection of what many people would think impossible - stories of forgiveness in the face of unspeakable criminal trauma and loss. Her introduction, alone, is compelling reading. Her tone of disinterested compassion and ease with ambiguity, her refusal to take any kind of moral high ground in exploring forgiveness, is moving and inspiring. The stories themselves are breathtaking in the horrors they describe and in the humanity they evoke. At every turn this book throws you into a world of extremes where the brilliance of the human heart glows, unmistakably, all the brighter for standing out against the dark.

Important Book for Our Time

Marina Cantacuzino is one of the foremost authorities on the concept of forgiveness and its countless meanings. Her introduction is eloquent. While tracing the history of The Forgiveness Project and The F Word, she writes of her own journey during the past twelve years and how the stories she's collected have affected her own thinking and emotions. Each personal testimony in the book represents that individual's feelings, and doesn't impose any definition on others. The Forgiveness Project has provided legitimate ways a secular humanist like myself can join the dialogue.
