No more blank pages
By Trilla Pando
Yes, I'm going to write poetry. Just as soon as I find time. I've made this almost mantra for most of my life. Somehow, there rarely seems to be time, and then when there is, it's the horror of the blank page. Now what?
Wingbeat II provides an answer to both of my dilemmas. The exercises are so interesting and, often, fun (have you ever written a "bad sonnet" on purpose?) that I don't have to worry about finding time, the time finds me. And there are no more blank pages, the exercises are specific and while the words may not pour out, they come.
Scott Wiggerman and David Meischen have collected exercises from a broad range of practicing poets and teachers. You may not like all of them, but I can almost guarantee that you will like many. For me, several were worth the price of the book for that exercise alone.
One feature of the book I appreciate is the "Alternate Table of Contents" that presents the exercises by category (many appear in several categories) such as "Voice or Persona," "Revision," "Mining Memories," and especially "For the Beginning Poet."
Beginning poets, reluctant poets, established poets, all poets will find something here.

By Millicent Accardi
Poetry exercises by Sheryl Luna, Pablo Miguel Martínez, Valerie Martinez, Carmen Gimenez Smith, Tim Seibles, Barbara Crooker, Diane Lockward, Allison Hedge Coke-- This book is so full of innovative ideas a creative writing teacher could use this as her only textbook in a poetry 101 course. Pin point examples and chock full of sample poems and super fun ideas-- Great as a gift for the writers in your life and great to use in the classroom.
