Miracle in the everyday

"...It also began a new friendship of sorts with Rumi...I began to envision the 13th century mystic waxing ecstatic about union with the beloved while I was in my son's kindergarten classroom, at the beach or at karate. And everywhere I am able to picture Rumi, he shows me where I'm close-minded, judgmental, or stuck and suggests new ways to see the world."
With her first poem, Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer surprised me and drew me in when she encounters Rumi in her garden as she thins the carrots.
Be nothing,
Says Rumi,
And I say
"But..."
I am thinning
the carrots,
crowded in the row,
and I wonder
who will thin them
if I am nothing.
"I did not say
Do nothing"
Trommer's gentle humor is evident in many of her poems, giving us a glimpse of Rumi frolicking in ocean waves or gently chiding her as she battles her recalcitrant sewing machine's tangled threads. In others, we share her uncertainty and fear as she learns from her invisible teacher to look at things in another way, and to open herself to wider experience and new understanding.
Again I see
I do not know.
I don't know,
And the moon
Hides.
But I want to know
Where I am going.
Rumi says,
You are torturing
Your soul.
This book was a gentle gift, a teacher and companion to me, one that I will keep near and treasure and share with others any chance I get.
