About the Author
Jill Stoking qualified as a teacher of children with learning disabilities in 1970 and taught for a while in Surrey. When she moved to Devon, Jill was mainly employed as a care worker for adults with learning disabilities and the elderly, both in residential homes and in the community. Now retired, she lives with her dog in a mobile home on the North Downs in Kent, surrounded by ever changing views and a gloriously big sky. Jill has one son who now lives in New Zealand.

Deeply poignant and emotional

Jill Stoking has written a memoir that brought the house down with her selfless caring for her mother who suffered from Alzheimer's. The story about Joan not only brought tears to my eyes every few pages, but made me wonder if I was crying for Joan or for Jill. I had no idea how Alzheimer sufferers changed so radically, nor did I realize the profound strength a caregiver must retain to endure the 24/7 care. Reading Jill's story made me live it with her and I truly do not know if I would have the same courage and solid devotion to care like she did. This is an amazing educational book as well as a heavy piece of emotion and I encourage others to read every page. Well written also.

Compelling - I believe this Memoir should be purchased by every nursing home everywhere.

I've just finished reading Joan's Descent into Alzheimer's by Jill Stoking. Jill Stoking I found your Memoir compelling. I am lucky enough to have this Memoir in paperback - somehow it felt right actually holding the book. Your Memoir should be of great help to others who may find themselves in similar circumstances - especially when times/events/frustrations/doubt make them feel as though they're about to fall down and never get up themselves. Thank you Jill for sharing those years. In my 'humble' opinion this is a must-read & so recommended not only for those folks out there who are struggling to cope with being a carer but also for those who wish to go into caring as a profession - It's a 'hard ask' and obviously needs to be managed properly - dedication and common sense are musts. It's a real eye-opener. I think this Memoir should be bought by every nursing home everywhere. I like the way it's written - down to earth, warts and all - no unnecessary over-sentimentality - What a 'journey' this Author has been on and at the same time dealing with her own turmoils in life. Once again a Compelling read. Thank you.

Brutally Honest

This brutally honest Memoir is an eye opener into the horrors of Alzheimer's and the care needed to provide quality of life. Jill Stoking, Joan's daughter, is faced with unending medical traumas at the hands of incompetent caregivers and poorly run nursing homes. It is gut-wrenching to read some of the atrocities that Joan had to endure due to lack of training and perhaps compassion. I will add that it bothered me considerably that Jill stayed in a loveless, mentally abusive marriage for as long as she did. I would not or could not have endured even a few years of what her husband put her through. I can only hope that the remainder of Jill's life is filled with less stress and more happiness.
