Gaining Increased Self Leadership

Jay Earley has written several books focusing on how you can be your own therapist using the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model. As his books have many examples, they are also quite helpful for therapists learning the IFS method. IFS basically sees our psyche as made out of many parts with the Self at the center. The Self is openly curious and compassionate with the parts, which helps us to develop compassionate listening and leadership skills. The idea behind all Earley's IFS books is to strengthen and increase the Self's internal leadership and heal wounded parts.
In this book, which mainly covers more advanced topics in IFS, Earley elaborates on how to track parts, interact with different parts, recognize Self-like parts, and resolve conflicts between parts.
Doing self-therapy is definitely NOT an easy task as it is likely to be interrupted and diverted by strong protectors. But I found this book very helpful in enhancing the Self's leadership role.

There are several very good books written about IFS

This is Jay Earley's 2nd Volume in his series on learning and practicing Internal Family Systems, also known as Self Therapy. Earley's books are targeted toward therapists and coaches looking to learn and deepen their skills and for people looking to use the principles for themselves. I am a therapist using IFS daily so my review is from that perspective.
There are several very good books written about IFS, but Earley's books have been particularly helpful to me. Earley is a natural trainer and this is reflected in his books, His writing is very clear and his examples and case vignettes illustrate the principles he is teaching very effectively.
This review is for Volume 2 - To a therapist who is looking to begin the practice of IFS, the first volume in this series is essential. This Volume 2 builds upon those principles from the first volume. To the seasoned IFS practitioner, this Volume 2 provides teachings that can deepen our understanding and skills. Although this is not a manual, it is filled with tips and steps that has allowed me to understand and apply to my practice immediately.
For example, Earley provides a very unique section on tracking the client's "parts" in our progress or case notes, helping us to organize and prepare between sessions; very helpful. Also in this volume, Earley provides detailed steps and techniques for dealing with all-too-common roadblocks to our clients' progress, like inner conflicts (polarizations) and several other types of defenses that derail our efficacy.
This Volume 2 and the first volume in the series are essential to any therapist or coach wishing to introduce or deepen their skills in the practice of IFS.

Important extension to the techniques in the first volume of Self Therapy

I'm not a therapist. I took the title of the first book in Jay Earley's Self Therapy series at its word and found it to be tremendously useful for working on my own psyche. The process outlined in that book was effective, but daunting. The truth is, our inner lives are populated with complex and contradictory parts. Especially tricky to work with are parts that perform functions that are only partially helpful, but which can also add burdens to our lives. One book, even one with as much important detail as Self Therapy, can only go so far in uncovering the details of how these parts function.
This second book in the Self-Therapy series goes a long way to addressing this issue. It goes deeper into the inner world of protector and exile parts, and provides a guidebook for how that world operates, how it can go wrong and how, gradually, to make it work better. It clarifies and extends the first book.
I recommend it highly.
