About the Author
Cher Pastore is founder of Cher Nutrition, a New York City–based practice that offers nutritional counseling to clients on topics such as weight loss, diabetes and prenatal nutrition. Cher has a Masters of Science (MS) in Clinical Nutrition and Food Studies from New York University. She is a Registered Dietitian (RD) and a Certified Diabetes Educator® (CDE®).

"Facts" Don't Always Add Up

I have to admit that I was more than a bit disappointed by this book. It is one of a number of books promising to "cure" diabetes strictly through a change in diet that includes the total elimination of all meat products. Although there may be some studies and cases to back-up this claim, the arguments as presented in this book are weak and at times slightly misleading.
First of all, I happen to have one of those "rare" cases of Type 2 diabetes that is not the result of being overweight and out of shape. I developed it in my mid 30's despite being otherwise active and healthy. I ate an entirely vegetarian diet for 3 years prior to being initially diagnosed with pre-diabetes and took a number of nutritional supplements that Cher Pastore recommends in her book. Despite this, I slowly progressed from pre-diabetes to becoming insulin dependent 10 years later. Since being diagnosed I have made dramatic improvements to my diet, maintained vigorous exercise schedules at times and pretty much went through every possible type of diet and exercise program (and prescription drug) promoted for diabetics with little to show in the way of results.
The reason that I bring up my background is because the author seems to promote claims that she must realize may be true for some people but untrue for others. Using the term "miracle" in the title doesn't exactly add to the book's credibility, either. Telling diabetics that they can "get off their diabetes medication for good" by using a 28 day plan (from back cover) is just plain misleading IMHO and not supported by any type of clinical studies that I am aware of.
A good portion of advice given on the inside of the book seems to be contradictory or confusing. Cinnamon, for example, is touted as a spice that is helpful for diabetes. However, the author notes that there are no studies to conclusively prove this, nor are any cited. That brings me to another problem that I have with the book. The author throws around phrases such as "studies have shown..." left and right without attribution or citation. There are a few citations in the book, but nowhere near what I would expect for a book based upon hard science. Without citations and named studies to back up the large number of claims made, it comes off looking like just another diet fad book.
There are other oddities that just do not seem to stack-up. For example, on page 63 under "Foods To Avoid", the author lists refried beans and pinto beans, despite these being high protein, healthy foods with a low glycemic index. The author also seems to feel that ALL meat products are bad for you and contain growth hormones, antibiotics, preservatives and other nasty chemicals. This is simply not the case. Not all meat products are full of chemicals and preservatives. There is widespread availability of organic, natural beef and other meats available in grocery stores, just as there are organic and non-GMO fruits and vegetables for sale. This fact is never addressed however.
Another example, on page 37 the author rails against artificial sweeteners because, "The main problems with artificial sweeteners are that THEY ENHANCE YOUR APPETITE FOR SWEET THINGS and contribute to greater weight gain than sugar does". Yet on page 62 the author has a list titled, "How To Naturally Increase The Sweetness of Foods", giving a list of ingredients that make foods taste sweeter. The contradiction here should be obvious. The claim that artificial sweeteners cause more weight gain than sugar is also a "fact" based on studies that have proven inconclusive at best. Like many other claims in the book, this "fact" is also directly contradicted by statements made by the American Diabetes Association based upon clinical studies.
Lastly, the print in this book is so small that it was uncomfortable to read without reading glasses, which I have thus far only needed to use when reading labels on the back of products like toothpaste. About half of the book is also completely devoted to recipes. There are so many diabetes-friendly recipes for free on the Internet that these did not really add any value to the book.
In conclusion, if you are looking for a decent book on the benefits of a vegan/vegetarian diet to help treat diabetes, there are a couple that I would recommend instead. Dr. Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes: The Scientifically Proven System for Reversing Diabetes without Drugs is an excellent, well-researched book that provides a comprehensive look at the health benefits of a mostly plant-based diet for diabetics and provides facts and research to back-up his claims. The Gerson Therapy: The Proven Nutritional Program for Cancer and Other Illnesses is the most comprehensive book written on the use of a vegan diet, juicing and other natural methods to treat all types of disease, including diabetes. I highly recommend both of them.

Easy to read guide for the diabetic.

As a physician I found this book to be a useful reference and guide for people with diabetes and prediabetes. There is important and up to date information for individuals about nutrition and portion size. The recipe section is easy to follow with many delicious suggestions.

Good guide to better health

This is a very good guide to a solid way of eating for optimal health. I had gestational diabetes that, thankfully, did not stick around after the birth of my son; but since moms who've had GD have a higher chance of developing Type II Diabetes, I eat a diet to keep my blood glucose levels healthy.
If you are new to this way of eating, this book would be a wonderful introduction into lowering your BG levels into the healthy zones.
There is only one area in this book that I disagree with. She says to avoid all animal products due to them being polluted and high in unhealthy fats. I agree that conventional animal products are not good for you, but avoiding ALL animal products is like throwing the baby out with the bath water. Organic and grass-fed animal products in small amounts are actually very beneficial and make it much easier to stay on the path. Free-range and grass-fed meats are more expensive, but if you eat a few ounces at a time just a few days a week, instead of a large portion every day, it is pretty cost effective. Heavy cream or butter from grass fed cows are healthy fats; a tablespoon or two added into vegetable dishes add flavor and increase your body's ability to absorb the vitamins. Cage-free pasture-raised eggs are very good for you and make an easy meal with veggies to keep your BG in a healthy zone and your body fueled for several hours. You can find good prices of these type of items at Trader Joe's, farmer's markets and local co-ops. Veggies in comparison are cheap; so a plant-heavy diet where animal products are treated like condiments is affordable, delicious and very healthy.
The thing that surprised me was that Cher recommends consumption of tofu for protein instead of healthy meats or fish, but consumption of soy can actually mess with your body's estrogen balance and lead to other health problems. For people with hypothyroidism, soy is also a no-no since it can cause your thyroid to underperform even further. I skip the tofu and soy products, but do enjoy edamame as a once a week thing.
I have found the greatest success by simply replacing all grains and grain products with veggies. I have IBS and found that pretty much all grains wreak havoc on my system. When I replaced all grains with veggies (zoodles instead of noodles, chopped hearts of palm or grated cauliflower as a bed for curries, carrots sliced like chips and cucumbers for hummus instead of pita, sweet potato at breakfast instead of oatmeal, etc.) I found that I felt AMAZING and my skin looked even better. Veggies have plenty of healthy carbs to feed your brain too.
Overall, I think this is a great guide that could be wonderful with a few minor tweaks. For people who need hand-holding, there is a very detailed breakdown of the whole 28 days so there is no guessing about what you need to do. If you already adhere to a healthy BG diet, this book is a nice supplement to what you are already doing. A plant-heavy diet really is the key to optimal health.
