About the Author
Carla Martin-Wood has been a widely published poet since 1978. Recently retired from her career in the rat race world of advertising, she is relishing her newfound freedom. The author of seven full-length books of poetry prior to The Witch on Yellowhammer Hill, Carla’s most recent collection was Eiswein (The Pink Petticoat Press, 2015). She has also authored eight chapbooks, most recently Season of Mists (The 99% Press, 2012). A copy of Carla’s chapbook, Garden of Regret (Pudding House Publications Chapbook Series, 2009), resides in the Special Collections & University Archives at Stanford University. Carla's poems have appeared in a plethora of journals and numerous anthologies in the US, England, and Ireland since 1978. With a background of 13 years in theatre, she has performed her work from the hallowed University of The South at Sewanee to Greenwich Village. She has been nominated for The Pushcart Prize more than a dozen times, for Best of the Net twice, and is listed in Poets & Writers. Carla has been a lifelong political and social activist. Her current interests lie in human rights, preservation of the earth, universal healthcare and gun control.

An unforgettable collection - highly recommended!

When Carla asked if I would contribute some photography to this book, I felt honored. She's one of my favorite contemporary poets - without question. Her writing is powerful, and it ranges across many subjects and styles. Her imagery is unexpected and often, unusual in the extreme. Neologisms, for instance. Shifts in syntax and usage. Subtle incorporation of rhyme and meter that aren't readily apparent, but lend lyricism to specific poems. Free verse that is full of its own music. The book also includes several sonnets, a form she uses with natural grace, as she has done for many years.
But a poetry volume is more than the sum of its parts. Themes must be presented with conviction and supported by both memorable language and impassioned argument. A certain variety is demanded as well. Carla's work embraces both the real, literal world of human suffering and celebration, and the mystical, metaphysical world where the rules of material existence don't always apply. The result is a journey that offers surprises and fresh insights at every turn.
Here is a poet with a remarkable gift, whose writing deserves a wide audience. This is a beautiful book to hold in one's hands, admire for its quality and read more than once. It becomes an immersive experience. I invite the reader to pick up a copy and dive in.
