A Note from the Author
I wrote "When Caring Takes Courage" with the intention that it would be a quick, "go-to" reference for family caregivers. Reading it cover to cover or in sequential order is not necessary. Readers can choose the chapters that best answer current questions or challenges and then explore the rest of the book when they have time or when the need arises.
In my conversations with many families over the years, the common complaint I heard about existing books for Alzheimer's/dementia caregivers were, that the books were either way too detailed to find the information they were looking for quickly or that caregivers did not have the time to read a lengthy book. This handbook is about helping you in those moments when Dad won't stop looking for his car or refuses to take his medication, for when Mom is too frightened to bathe, or you are having trouble getting your Wife in the car to go to her doctor's appointment. In When Caring Takes Courage, you'll find effective scenario-based solutions for moments like these at your fingertips.
My hope is that readers think of this manual like their favorite cookbook. I want them to feel free to "dog-ear" the pages that helped, skip parts they may not need right now and mix in their own recipe for successful caregiving along the way. A must for caregivers

I just obtained this book a few days ago, but am totally immersed. I have worked with individuals and families dealing with cognitive disorders, and have provided community education and support groups for years. I am going to highly recommend this book to my clients, as it provides creative interventions and common sense. Caregivers need tools and an understanding of what is going on. What a wonderful resource. I suggest this book for anyone dealing with the heartbreak of dementia. Whether an actual Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia or other causes, there is something in here which should give caregivers a framework from which to work.

Incredibly Useful Guide for Caregivers

Hands-on, practical, and creative. Mara Botonis has clearly been on the "front line" delivering care to those with Alzheimer's Disease and other types of dementia. This is not a collection of "pie in the sky" ideas that have not been tried and tested. The interventions covered in this book offer real life solutions for caregivers. As a care provider, I have read hundreds of articles, books, and other publications on how to care for someone with Alzheimer's. While most contain good information, they lack the no-nonsense, easy to implement activities that our caregivers so desperately need. Ms. Botonis has proven that she understands the day-to-day struggles of a caregiver in this practical, yet compassionate guide. Thank you, Mara, for putting your years of experience and service on paper so that many might benefit and know that they are not alone.

Mara Botonis has compiled a brilliant, real life and common sense resource book that everyone that is caring for an Alzheimer's/dementia patient needs to have. Caregivers all too often find themselves navigating the uncharted mysterious waters of dementia as they lovingly take on the responsibility of caring for someone that has received this diagnosis.
So appropriately named, When Caring Takes Courage, gives the reader solid tips, interactive helps for planning, and valuable information on dementia that sadly continues to be so hard to find. Caregivers need quick, dependable information and they will find it in Mara's book.
From practical advice for daily care, to insightful resources for enlisting help and keeping records, to essential information about finances, planning, and having a plan, Mara has covered it all in this book. This is a must read, and a must have-on-hand if you provide care to a dementia patient.
