This is a great book. Very useful. My husband is a Med-Peds resident and he asked for this book so many times before it was even published. We even ordered two by accident. Anyhow, he is glad he finally got it. Excellent resource.

Not very inpatient-focused

This is more of an outline of general pediatrics than one focused on inpatient situations. This is disappointing, because I purchased the book expecting that it would prepare me to transition from solely outpatient work to seeing inpatients as well.Several sections cover problems that would rarely be seen with inpatients, and even more importantly, some sections that cover inpatient problems are light on aspects of management. However, it has the advantages of being concise, giving extensive differentials, and being quite comprehensive in terms of topics in general peds..

About the Author
Anne Firth Murray, a New Zealander, attended the University of California, Berkeley, and New York University, where she studied economics, political science, and public administration, with a focus on international health policy and women’s reproductive health. In the 1960s and 70s, she worked at the United Nations, taught in Hong Kong and Singapore, and spent several years with Oxford, Stanford, and Yale university presses. In the 1970s and 80s, she worked in the field of philanthropy, serving as a consultant to many foundations. From 1978 to the end of 1987, she directed the environment and international population programs of the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation in California. She is the Founding President of the Global Fund for Women, established in 1987, which provides funds internationally to seed, strengthen, and link groups committed to women’s well being. Her book Paradigm Found: Leading and Managing for Positive Change describes lessons learned from the early years of the Global Fund. Since 2000, she has been a consulting professor in human biology at Stanford University, where she teaches courses on international women’s health and human rights. and on love as a force for social justice. The first edition of her second book, From Outrage to Courage: Women Taking Action for Health and Justice, was published in 2008. Ms. Murray serves on several boards and councils of non-profit organizations, including the African Women’s Development Fund, Commonweal, the Global Force for Healing, the Global Justice Center, and SPARK (a network dedicated to women’s empowerment). She is the recipient of many awards and honors for her work on women’s health and philanthropy, and in 2005 she was among one thousand women nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. The true state of women around the world

This was assigned reading for a university class I am taking. I have lived abroad and think this one of the best accounts of the true state of women's lives. It was at times difficult to read, but very eye opening. This should be required reading for all women in the developed world!

Genuinely interesting and well written

As an international relations scholar with specializations on developing nations and gender issues, I highly recommend this book for those with or without a background in the issues covered in the book. If you already have a good grasp of the problems women face in conflict ridden or developing countries you can feel free to skip the introduction as it generally is a good basic overview of those problems. For those who are new to the subject, I highly recommend reading the introduction and considering it before moving on to further chapters. For some, it might be a good idea to read the introduction twice if you are planning to get involved with these issues beyond your own interest.

About the Author
Known as The Myth of Amherst for her withdrawal from society while still a young women, Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) had an inner life that was deeply emotional and intense. She know rapture and despair, pondered the wonder of God and the meaning of death. She broke tradition and was criticized for her seminal experiments with unorthodox phrasing, rhyme and broken meter, within concise verse forms, thus becoming an innovator and forerunner of modern poets.

Just as a prism breaks up light into a band of colors - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet - and their infinite gradations, so do Emily Dickinson's poems become, as it were, a prism which captures the white light of reality, a reality which as it flows through the prism of her poem explodes into a multiplicity of meanings.
It is the rich suggestiveness of her poems, a suggestiveness which generates an incredible range of meanings, that prevents us from ever being able to say (to continue the metaphor) that a given poem is 'about red' or 'about blue,' because her poems, as US critic Robert Weisbuch has observed, are in fact about everything. This is what makes her so unique, and this is why she appeals to every kind of reader, and even to children.
The present book, which has been edited by Brenda Hillman, gives us accurate texts of the poems in a 150-page selection taken from the authoritative variorum edition of Thomas H. Johnson, the well-known Dickinson scholar who worked many years to establish the correct texts.
The book is beautifully printed in two-colors on excellent paper, and in a tiny format which is perfect for the pocket. It would in fact make a very nice gift. You'd be making a gift of poetry which is one of the wonders of the world.

Good Poetry in almost good editions

This could be one of the best editions ever to be found for Dickinson's verse, if the editors had not choosed to arrange the poems thematically, rather than chronologically, as the "Complete poems" editors did. The book is divided into three sections, each one of them related to a specific topic: the poet's art, the works of love, death and resurrection. But the numeration is different from other editions, which makes it difficult to use in class, or to discuss in a scholar environment. However, as a home book it is perfect.

Some really important poems are not included, such as "Wild nights" or "there's a certain slant of light", although the selection is quite good in general.

piece of junk

This book is the poorest quality publishing I've ever seen. There are at least a dozen typos/type-setting mistakes in the first two pages. It is not paginated properly nor is there any space between the poems. It is a messy piece of junk. I will never purchase another book from General Books. After looking at the fine print carefully I now see it has a disclaimer which states that the publisher used OCR software in the publishing. Buyer Beware. I wish I had known.

About the Author
Dr. Erika Karohs is a retired college teacher and the founder of the Karohs International School of Handwriting Analysis. She has written more than 82 book on the subject of handwriting analysis. (A must-read book for anyone who has just been diagnosed with cancer) This is a well written and researched bookthat covers all the aspects of using cannabis oil for curing cancer. There are dozens of good or not so good books that are making the same claims, but this book is different. It is unique because (a) it is based upon the author's personal experiences in curing himself and (b) it lists the testimonials of other prople who have also been cured, including who had been given up as incurable by their doctors. This is a practical book. It explains which strains work better for cancer than others, and how to choose the best delivery method- smoking, vaporizing, edibles, etc... It illuminates why oil seems to be superior for cancer treatment and it lists step-by-step how to make your own oil. This means that you don't have to search through dozens and dozens of You Tube videos and forums. Using this book as guide. you can start making your own medicine instantly. The author includes many tips and tricks based upon several years of making cannabis oil. If you have just recently been diagnosed with cancer, this book is extremely valuable because it provides you with a much broader view of your options.

This is the first book that gives cancer patients a ray of hope. It is written in easy to understand language and even has examples of people that have been cured by cannabis oil. The results with this oil are astounding. Everyone who has cancer or knows someone with cancer should get this book. Mike Karohs seems to be a very caring and hardworking person trying to help and to save people. The scourge of cancer is too awful to speak about. I am a cancer patient and I know what I'm talking about. I am very impressed that Mike seems willing to take on doctors and the dreaded pharmaceutical companies. YOU NEED TO BUY THIS BOOK!

About the Author
Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace was born illegitimately in Greenwich, London, in 1875 to actors Mary Jane Richards and T.H. Edgar. As an infant he was adopted by George Freeman, a porter at Billingsgate fish market. Aged eleven, Wallace sold newspapers at Ludgate Circus and upon leaving school took a job with a printer. He later enlisted in the Royal West Kent Regiment, before transferring to the Medical Staff Corps, and was sent to South Africa. In 1898, he published a collection of poems called 'The Mission that Failed', and subsequently left the army to become correspondent for Reuters. South African war correspondent for 'The Daily Mail' followed and his articles were later published as 'Unofficial Dispatches'. His outspokenness infuriated Lord Kitchener, who removed his credentials. He then edited the 'Rand Daily Mail', but gambled disastrously on the South African Stock Market. Returning to England, Wallace at first reported on crimes and hanging trials, before becoming editor of 'The Evening News'. It was in 1905 that he founded the Tallis Press, publishing 'Smithy', a collection of soldier stories, and 'The Four Just Men'. The latter was published with the ending removed as an advertising stunt and he offered oe500 to readers who could successfully guess the ending. Unfortunately, many did and he was almost bankrupted. At various times Wallace also worked as a journalist on 'The Standard', 'The Star', 'The Week-End Racing Supplement' and 'The Story Journal'. In 1917, he became a Special Constable at Lincoln's Inn and also a special interrogator for the War Office. The Daily Mail sent Wallace to investigate atrocities in the Belgian Congo, a trip that provided material for his 'Sanders of the River' books. In 1923, he became Chairman of the Press Club and in 1931 stood as a Liberal Parliamentary candidate for Blackpool. Wallace's first marriage in 1901 to Ivy Caldecott, daughter of a missionary, ended in divorce in 1918 and he later married his much younger secretary, Violet King. Along with countless articles, some 23 screenplays and many short stories, Wallace wrote more than 170 books, which have been translated into 28 languages and sales of which have exceeded 50 million copies. Over 160 films have been made from his books - more than any other author. In the 1920's one of Wallace's many publishers claimed that a quarter of all books read in England were written by him. His sales were exceeded only by 'The Bible'. He died in 1932 whilst working on the screenplay for 'King Kong', having moved to Hollywood after being offered a contract by RKO.

About the Author
Lawrence Kessenich has had poetry published in the Sewanee Review, Atlanta Review, Poetry Ireland Review, Comstock Review, and many other magazines. He won the 2010 Strokestown International Poetry prize and has had two poems nominated for Pushcart Prizes. His chapbook Strange News was published in 2008 and his first full-length poetry book, Before Whose Glory, was published 2013. Kessenich is the co-managing editor of Ibbbetson Street. He has also published essays, one of which was featured on NPR’s “This I Believe” and appears in the anthology This I Believe: On Love. His short plays have been produced in New York, Boston, and in Colorado, where he won the People’s Choice Award in a national drama competition.

"Age of Wonders" by Lawrence Kessenich.

This is a stately book. Lawrence Kessenich writes with a sureness, as well as a deep respect for his subjects. He explores the spiritual heart of things in a seemingly understated and quiet way. There is an subtle elegance about the way the poems evolve. The progression of the book is like a journey, and the author's gaze is a profound and penetrating one. Throughout, there is a sense of integrity about the poems and the writer's point of view. I like especially the nature poems, though all of them speak to me. This is a book to keep, to re-read. "Age of Wonders" is a treasure.

Quiet power and virtuosity

As with Kessenich’s first book (Before Whose Glory), Age of Wonders is virtuosic in its variety of modes and topics. Many of my favorite pieces are quiet meditations: an illuminated memory, a moment of fear or grace, the feeling of satisfaction when a puzzle piece falls into place. "Learning to Love the Ocean," "Now," "Love: A Shearing," "Dusting Under the Buddha," "Living in the Fog," "Grace," "Dear Anne," "Explosions," and "Coming and Going" are just a few of the poems I marked to revisit. In "Supposition," Kessenich names a feeling we have all had but may not been able to put words to – a gift both useful and delightful.

The book is a treat to read and may even change the way you think about your own quiet moments.

About the Author
Mavric “D’Maverick’Webb Is a Jamaican-born poet, a writer with over five ‘5’ years experience writing poetry. He is the recipient of JCDC’s (Jamaica cultural development commission) and Toastmaster most coveted awards. His poems were published in JCDC’s Gold and Silver anthology.

I saw the heart of a growing man and got inspired!

I scanned it and can't wait to spend time with these great poems. It's not what I expected at all. They are inspiring. You have a great vocabulary, good rhythm, and capture the soul that transcends culture. There is a catharsis experienced from reading the Psalms; I had the same experience with your reflections. Art of Poetry creates better unity and understanding between our races too -- such contrast from the division promoted today.I feel like I got to see in your heart. Kudos!

Very well done and thought provoking.

I'm not really a fan of poetry, but when I read this I changed my mind. The author's works are honest and heartfelt, showing just how deeply involved he is in looking within and expressing those hidden feelings we all have. I was especially touched by the intro at the beginning, where he briefly went over some major points in his life, including his relationship with his mother. Throughout the pages, one can follow his personal growth as a man, son, and a father. There are photos of him in various stages throughout his life that hammer in all the points he was making in his poems. I think they add a personal touch that allows the reader to empathize with him and the things in his life that most of us take for granted.

All in all, this is probably the most honest and self-aware collection of poetry I've ever read. I especially like the fact the poetry is free verse, bordering on prose. This is definitely not the work of an amateur song writer, but the deep, inner musings of a true poet.

A delightful collection of poetry and photography!

This book was fantastic on so many levels. The poetry is deep and heartfelt. It pushes beyond standard boundaries and borders that most poetry gets stuck. It forces you to answer questions deep down about life and purpose. As if that weren't enough, the book also contains a wonderful collection of photography that helps bring the poems to life. It gives you a great deal of perspective on life and makes you ask yourself about your own life. After reading this book, I had to go through it a second time since the material is so rich and deep, one read through isn't enough!
