This is the second poetry book by Douglas Vaughan, well, what can I say? Wow, fantastic, inspirational, so many words that be be used for the black book. When you read it, you will see what I mean.

Informative and interesting

While I don't personally suffer from diabetes its something I think we should all be better informed on and I'm well aware that my diet could and should be a lot better.
This book is only 90 pages long but I found it informative and interesting and it's given me the push I needed to make changes.
I've done 30 mins exercise this morning and eaten a hand full of nuts neither of which I normally do so hopefully I'll keep this up.

I downloaded this book as a kindle for free and so far it is worth every penny. Please stay away from this. While there are surely some good points, the author is talking about importance of brushing your teethe with fluoride tooth paste (known neurotoxin) as well as how bad saturated fats are. Things clearly harmful or simply outdated. I may finish the book but I see more and more concerning points that unfortunately sounds like somebody educated by Big farma wrote.

Powerful Historical Record in Poetic Form

I came across a poem by Owen, "Dulce et Decorum Est," and was so impressed by it that I looked up the author. I found he'd written many poems about the First World War - a war in which sadly he was killed just before its end. That led me to read this collection of his poetry.

To be honest, I found some of his poems confusing or difficult to follow. However, others were powerful presentations of the horrors of war. More than a book of poetry, this is an historical record of the experiences of the young men of England in "The Great War". It's a view of the War you don't find in history books, which tend to focus on campaigns and battles and strategy without much insight into the personal lives and thoughts of those who experienced the War on the ground.

Owen's poems are sobering reminders that behind the glory and weapons and strategies of war are individuals suffering and dying. One of the most powerful is "Disabled" about a young man who lies about his age to enlist in order to impress a girl and comes home legless and missing an arm. As with many of his poems, the enthusiasm and bravado of the enlistee is contrasted with the 'reality check' he receives when war is experienced. Real war, it turns out, is not what's portrayed on the enlistment poster.

Another of the best is "The Parable Of The Old Man and The Young". Here Owen takes the story of Abraham's near sacrifice of Isaac from Genesis chapter 22 and casts Abraham as the "Old Man" of Europe's leaders and Isaac as the "Young man" of her youth. Given the opportunity to stop the sacrifice of the young with a substitute of, not a ram, but their pride, they refuse to sacrifice their pride and stop the slaughter.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of the First World War or poetry in general. I warn you it's not an uplifting inspirational read but it is also not depressing and somber just to be so. It's an important historical record and carries within it an important reminder for all of us living this side of the "War to end all wars."

Poetry to be savoured

Wilfred Owen is a wonderful poet who demonstrates a true mastery of the English language. He uses a rich and precise (and sometimes, to us, archaic) vocabulary and at least once in every poem presents a new and striking combination of words that creates a vivid image. Although written during WWI, the questions and problems Owen raises are, I believe, ones that we still must face in modern warfare. Owen writes excellent poetry, and good poetry like this should always be consumed like a good whiskey: swirled, sniffed, sipped, savoured and only then swallowed.

This edition also includes a number of unfinished poems, which are wonderful to read as it provides a sense of his writing process.

The one drawback with this the kindle edition is a flaw that appears to be common to many kindle poetry books. To best appreciate the layout of the poems, it is necessary to set the font size at its smallest setting. Further, the kindle edition does not provide page breaks between poems, so a poem may start with only a few lines (or maybe even only the title) at the bottom of a page.

This is a must read (and re-read).

Great Book

Owen's poetry about War is as good as any poet at any time or era. His representation of the conscience, fraternity, despair, cynicism and guts of the World War I soldier is at times heartbreaking and always worthy of deep reflection on the stupidity of
sending young people to war by old blowhard politicians; and yet he writes in a subtle way that is neither preachy nor self-centered.
He was a fine fine poet and as we approach the 100th anniversary of the beginning of "The Great War"...we should reflect on his view and the view of others like him who carried the politician's torch while the flame of the lives of so many known and unknown young soldiers was extinguished at the Marne, Verdun and other less notable battle sites. Everyone should read Horace's poem where the line Dulce et Decorum est pro patria mori...and then read Owen's poem by that title, before they beat the war drum.

This is truly an absolutely amazing book on understanding and improving your relationships. It's filled with great advice and anyone reading this book will come away with a vastly improved understanding of themselves and their relationships. The expert psychotherapist-author delves into personality disorders and dysfunctional families to clearly explain why some relationships only need a bit of work while other don't work at all. Wilkerson is a poet, playwright, and theorist, and teaches writing at Columbus State University, and he has been recognized with the Lillian E. Smith Creative Arts Fellowship and holds an MFA from Queens University of Charlotte, NC. His works include the chapbook A Primer for the Minotauric Arts, Threading Stone, and Table 5, a collaborative series of surrealist prose poems.

Poetry of EPIC proportions

"Will you be in my opera?" Wilkerson asks in his new epic book of poetry "Ars Minotaurica" and the answer is "YES!" Carey Scott Wilkerson's sophomore tome is different entirely to "Threading Stone" (his first poetic offering). He draws on mythology, history and philosophy (both personally and societal) to work these awkward, disturbing human condition issues out. The entire book is epic, theatrical and filled with the fears, doubts and ultimate joys of the human condition deconstructed and resurrected with mythic proportions. These poems are a giant puzzle or maze that engage our own inner monsters (myths) leaping sideways, up and down and confronting us in the middle.
I don't want to spoil anything for the reader, but the myth of the Minotaur is spelled out thusly: "was a bull-headed monster born to Queen Pasiphae of Krete after she had coupled with a bull. The creature resided in the twisting maze of the labyrinth, where he was offfered a regular sacrifice of youths and maids to satisfy his cannibalistic hunger."
Wilkerson confronts and defeats his own Minotaur in this volume, the words hit like hot molten lava erupting from a volcano. He grabs you by the heart and wrestles you to look in your mirror for clues of being human. It's as if he's saying, "WAKE UP! We're all evil and all good. Deal with it!"
This work is a must read! I find myself returning to his words and phrases for glimpses of my own demon/angel.

About the Author

Robert D. Martin, MD, has been a practicing clinical and academic psychiatrist for nearly fifty years. With a lifetime of experience behind him, in this book he brings to bear what he has learned with patients in treatment with the hope this will be helpful to his readers in the business of trying to make life work for them.

Dr. Martin’s debut book, The Sensible Life, takes a philosophical look at how individuals interpret the experience of life. He is currently working on his first novel.

Sensible in all its meanings

A beautiful book, aptly titled. Robert Martin celebrates a life fully felt in all its contradictoriness...but he's pragmatic as well as lyrical, reminding us that it's easier to climb mountains if we're wearing sensible shoes. Plainly determined not to insult smart readers with a banal how-to list, he still manages to sneak in some singularly useful advice about getting along with sensibilities different from our own.
