Very rewarding for the discerning reader of contemporary poetry

Cooper Dozier's latest book of poetry, ZIGGOMATIC KEYS, is nothing short of fascinating. In it, he touches on a number of important themes using brilliant imagery within his competent verse, especially in the Jabberwocky section of the book. It was certainly my favorite part, as Cooper tackles his subject matter with tremendous force, without coming off as didactic or preachy. The book is thus very rewarding for the discerning reader of contemporary poetry.

In all I give the book 5 stars for composition and literary craftsmanship. I look forward to reading his future offerings, as well.

As a licensed chiropractor, I highly recommend this as required reading for all students and practicing chiropractors. This is the first time patient positioning is succinctly explained and modified for the variances of patient bodyside/height and weight. The basis of the book is the explanation of the Arc-of-Tension, which allows us to make each adjustment specific to the patient.

This is a chiropractic textbook that should be a welcomed addition to any office.

I love the way she revealed the truth of God being revealed in our everyday adventures.
How she showed that God is nearer than we actual think or believe.
Ms. Johnson showed that God really does want to have a relationship with us and be a part of our everyday lives and experiences. I really loved the poem about the early morning and Precious one are my 2 favorites. I loved the size of the book. It was just right and not too overwhelming. I can't wait for the next one! From the Author
The poems in this book describe what life was like for me during the 19 years I was a school librarian. I often journal about my day or even take notes in classes or professional development using poetry. Each poem in the book is about an issue I personally dealt with as a school librarian. I hope other librarians will see themselves in some of the poems!

About the Author
Kathy Mansfield is the library media/textbooks consultant for the Kentucky Department of Education. She was a school librarian for 19 years in Kentucky in inner city, suburban, and rural elementary schools. She currently provides information and resources to Kentucky K-12 school librarians and advocates for quality library media programs at the state agency and through participation in state and national school library professional organizations.

Must Be Nice! is more than just nice; it's a wonderful book of poetry

I've had a great appreciation for school librarians (and media specialists) for a long time after working with them in my kid's school as a volunteer from time to time, and I can say that these poems really hit the nail on the head. Kathy Mansfield shows a deep and loving knowledge of what it means to teach every student in a school at one point throughout a week, and her poems are very entertaining and revealing. I have read other poetry books by this author and she is equally captivating in other works.

Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers

This is a nice collection of poems about nature and man's place within it. Personally, I didn't truly come to appreciate Wordsworth until I hit my 30s. I read Lyrical Ballads and other poems as an undergrad in college, but at the time, he struck me as a touchy feely tree-hugger. I recall reading lines like, "I wandr'd lonely as a cloud," and thinking to myself how fluffy it all sounded. But the other day, I read the following lines: "The world is too much with us, late and soon, getting and spending, we lay waste our powers." Think about just those two lines for awhile. I sure did. I read this in college and didn't think twice or bat an eye, but I now see this poem, and the larger collection in which it is found, contains profound wisdom about our alienation from nature and the self. If you buy this book, my recommendation is to start with "Lines Written a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey," and read maybe four lines a day, in no particular rush, letting the words and imagery seep in slowly like amber down a tree.

Love this book!

The storm is a terrible thing to endure when it is your own. Do you trust that there is love true love out there seeking you as you are it? Do you dare to trust in yourself and the universe to find it? Is it already out there seeking you because you already know it from a dream, from a time that cannot be recalled?...
I read this in one sitting and love this piece. Very raw and open something needed when looking for love. I read this on a tough day for me but it both made me smile and cry, it made me realise the sort of love I want to have, to find, the things I want to share with that person.
I've also heard the podcasts of snippets from this book and it made me love it more.
If I ever have a down day where I am at the end of my tether and I need a good pick me up, I think this book will be it.
If I could give more than 5 stars I would.

From the perspective of the psychiatrist

A strange, stimulating journey! A psychiatrist narrates this collection of loosely connected case studies about his patients, involving group therapy sessions, individual sessions, and discussions between the clinical staff about their patients. Most of the chapters begin by introducing new patients who have a bizarre set of symptoms that the doctor and staff try to make sense of, resulting in unusual disorders I’d not heard about before, facts about the patient’s history that helped reveal their symptoms, and a few mysteries that weren’t entirely cleared up in my mind.

The narrator/doctor did a good job of showing what I imagine are the rewards and frustrations of treating psychological disorders, and didn’t shy away from pointing out his own mistakes and biases. It reminded me somewhat of the HBO drama In Treatment, but in a hospital setting and greater focus on how the patients’ physical symptoms played a role in their problems.

I found most of the stories sad by themselves, but by the end of the book it had risen to a more hopeful note, as it becomes clear that few people come completely “cured.” The better standard is whether people can improve enough to return to the live they want to live. Interesting to hear the thoughts of the doctor about what I assume are true case studies. Definitely recommended!

I expected More

This book of "rustic poems, prayers, and elegant short stories..." was not at all what I expected, and not at all up to my standards for any of the sections.

In the first section the author has provided us with several poems of varying lengths that mostly either deal with boyhood or death/loss. However, the poems read as though he couldn't decide between traditional rhyming schemes and 'free form' poetry and so got caught in a bad in-between. On top of that, many of these poems do not portray what the descriptions say they are about. Poetry is very subjective, but in my opinion these could have used more work.

In the second section we are given a few prayers, mostly short and mostly not rhyming (though a few fall back into the couplet trap here and there). However, they all sound very bland and typical of prayers I've been hearing weekly for my entire life. I was really hoping for more elegant writing and more eloquent prayers.

The third section is labeled as 'short stories' but they are really a few short tales of the author's childhood. While these are mildly interesting, the writing is, again, not as well refined as I believe that it should be and each tale needed a bit more editing and polishing.

Finally, they fourth section contains a duology of children's stories, labeled as having 'morals' these tales are long winded, written in language too advanced for most still reading 'children's' stories, and needed much more polishing before being put out for show. I believe with another revise and edit session (or two) this book could really pop, but right now everything is metered, rhymed, and written in a way that makes it feel off and grating to my nerves in a very bad way.

The cover, however, is GORGEOUS!

There are two sections to this book, the first is a collection of short poems and the second a set of short stories. I found the poems nice and the short stories great, the poems cover many topics, but most refer to a boy growing up where there were open spaces to play in.
The short stories are in two categories, the first relate youthful experiences of the author when he and his brother went fishing with their father. His father worked six and seven days a week and spent nearly all his extra money indulging his hobby of saltwater fishing. The stories are not about bringing back a major catch, the topics are epic failures when what can go wrong did go wrong. Especially when inexperienced children are taken on fishing trips. The stories are amusing as often what goes wrong is far funnier than events that go right.
The second set of stories are two nature stories written for children. The first is about a community of panda bears in China and how they came together to select a new leader. In this selection process, the current leader Wise Bear is being challenged by Strong Bear. Their names indicate which characteristic is most dominant in each of the candidates. Each of them is issued a challenge and their solution strategies are a lesson in wisdom over strength.
The second story for children is about the community of butterflies in a time of drought. With very little water available one of the butterflies forms an alliance with a dragonfly in order to locate one of the few wells that has not dried up. Accessing the well is not easy, for it is in the middle of an open field surrounded by trees containing a large flock of birds that like to eat butterflies. Only through cooperative efforts between the swarms of butterflies and dragonflies can the problem be solved. This is a lesson in the value of cooperative behavior, not only between the members of a family but also between disparate groups that share a common purpose.
While the poems are good, the last two stories are excellent tales for children. Assigning human characteristics to animals always has a strong appeal to children and this book is worth purchasing just for that feature.
